June 29, 2024: Reduction Printmaking - Working with One Carved Block & Multiple Colors

$180.00

TIME: 10:00 to 4:00 with a 1/2 hour lunch break.

This 1 day class is taught by Denise Markbreit - Printmaker and APS Founder/Owner.

Reduction Printmaking is an Intermediate Level class - you must have taken the APS Introduction to Linoleum Block Printmaking class or have previous printmaking experience.

Picasso popularized this technique and used it cleverly in many linoleum cuts between 1958 and 1963. Reduction linoleum prints are created by cutting away areas of color and printing your image, working light to dark. At each step, portions of your image are carved away. As this process continues, a rich multi-colored print emerges - but there is no back stepping! This form of printmaking is sometimes referred to as a suicide print!

  • You will learn how to plan, safely carve, print and re-carve your linoleum blocks to achieve a finished set or a small edition of prints.

  • Registration techniques, so necessary to keeping your prints looking crisp, will be covered.

  • You will work with safer soy based inks in a small group setting, in our professional print studio.

Class limited to 8 participants.

Class held at Asheville Print Studio: Riverview Station - Studio #108, 191 Lyman Street, River Arts District, Asheville, NC

CLASS FEE: $180 *Price includes all materials.

DENISE MARKBREIT

PRINTMAKER and FOUNDER-OWNER of Asheville Print Studio + Gallery

Denise discovered Akua ink - a soy based, safer printmaking solution while at an artists’ retreat. It was a game changer for her printmaking practices. Delving into safer techniques, without solvents or chemicals, opened up a world of eco-friendly printmaking possibilities including Mokuhanga, Mokulito, Mixed Media printing and Solar Plate print matrixes. Denise has been hooked on green printmaking ever since!

In addition to her pursuit of printed fine art images, Denise creates hand printed home accessories, and print based mixed media images and sculptures. Denise also regularly teaches printmaking workshops and mentors artists through the Asheville Print Studio Membership Program.

In 2018 Denise founded the Asheville Print Studio + Gallery. She is a member of the Asheville Printmakers and exhibits her prints, as well as work by a core group of printmakers, at Asheville Print Gallery. Denise holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MST from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her fine art prints have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions across the country and reside in art collections worldwide.
